God?

God?, originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

I was interviewed by Eloísa for TugaMagazine and she challenged me to draw a portrait of God.
I have to say it was a hard one, because i only had a few hours, but i had a lot of fun with it.
I used watercolors, no sketching at all, because the medium allowed me to discover shapes without controlling too much. After a few washes, i painted gouache over the watercolors and finally scanned it and added a few color corrections and that was it.

Thank you Eloísa! You can read the interview she made, but only in portuguese, here, http://tugamagazine.deviantart.com/blog/33445552/
Here are some photos of my table where i was working.

Table

On the left side of the photo you can see the plate where i mixed my watercolors, and on the right side, my palete for gouaches. I've used Winsor and Newton watercolors, Carand d'ache gouaches, painted with Winsor & Newton Cotman series, and the brush on top of the sketchbook is a sable hair brush, but it doesn't have a brand.
Finally, the paper is a Canson watercolor Sketchbook, 300gr.
And now a close ups on the painting.

Closer to God

Now i want to paint more Gods!

I hope you enjoy it and i'll waiting your opinions and critiques!

A Naifa in Coimbra

A Naifa in Coimbra, originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

A Naifa in Coimbra
On May 27th, i went to A Naifa's concert, in Oficina Municipal do Teatro, Coimbra.
Link to their blog
The show was amazing, and by the third song i was drawing it.
Even with very few light to see what i was doing, i went for it, and tried to capture what i was seeing. And it was great!
Even more lucky i felt when i shared the drawings with the band members! Who liked a lot and said that it was the first time they have seen drawings of them playing.
It was a very cool night, and you can see the drawings clicking on the images above, that links to the set in Flickr.
For the tech details, i drew with a Pentel waterbrush, filled with Winsor&Newton black ink on a Moleskine Plain Soft Notebook - Large sketchbook.

Hope you enjoy it, and if you also draw, maybe you feel inspired to try the same.

Take care!!

New Work! Poster for Bolsa de Mérito Artístico

Poster for a music Scholarship, given by Câmara Municipal de Montemor-o-Velho.

Here's the link to the Scholarship rules and terms, http://www.cm-montemorvelho.pt/editais_2010/bolsas_merito_artistico_area_musica.htm

The illustration was made with brush and ink, drawn directly, and then colored digitally. I started with the inks but still hadn't got a clear ideia for the colors, but started playing around and exploring things and got to final result.
I believe it's a bit different from what i've done so far.

But what i am most happy about it's the concept behind it.
It's a scholarship for music. And i choosed to draw the public, and the reward that a good work, or a god concert has, which are the clapping of the hands.
Any type of music, people or genre can be visualized, it's up to the reader to imagine that.

:) Take care,
André

Hello everyone!

This is my participation on Daniel Maia's Project called Cadavre Exquis.
The way it works the story is being told a page at a time, by a different author, which can choose how he's going to continue the story.

So this is my take on it, made with brush and ink, on paper, and the grey tones were done digitally, as well as the typography.

IF - Unfold

IF - Unfold, originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

I've unfolded this little zombie from my darkside :D , heheh, and when the IF topic got out, i already had the drawing started.
So i decided to go with it and try to do something a little different and experiment!
I started by drawing with a quill pen and ink, very loose and spontaneous. After that i've colored it using watercolors, colored pencils, and scanned it.
The size of the paper it's an a6 sketchbook i'm using now.
Which by itself it's a different journey.
Digitally i've added the texture which already had the ornaments.
The texture can be download from here, www.bittbox.com/freebies/free-high-res-texture-pack-the-a...

Afternoon Moleskinerie

Just a nice afternoon sketching on my moleskine, the one with black softcover, 13x21cm.
It was a very spontaneous drawing, where i was reacting to what the pencil was making on the paper and seeing what it would be fun to do. After the drawing i added a little detail in watercolor and the light parts in white gouache.
And i enjoyed a lot!

Little Red Riding Hood

Hello everyone!

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood 2

Little Red Riding Hood 3

I did these three illustration to a Children Illustration contest that happens every two years in Barreiro,Portugal.
You can check the winners here, blog
oficial site
They are from the story of the Little Red Riding Hood.
The first one is when she´s leaving her home, going to her grandmother's house.
Her mother is warning her about the wolf.
The second one is when she meets the wolf and he's able to mislead her, and she's going to pick some flowers, giving the wolf some advantage on the way to grandmother's.
In this one i remembered the Magritte's painting where an horseman it's in the florest and thought it would be a nice way to show the wolf in this case.
here's a link to the painting,
http://immerseyoursoulinlove.files....57-magritte.jpg
The final one is when the wolf already at grandmother's house and the little girl is entering the house, without knowing that the wolf is there. I've tried to tell the reader that he's there, trying not be literal doing so.

I want to improve if possible, them so im putting them here to your apreciation and critique.
So please do so and i hope you enjoy them!

Thanks!

Originally uploaded by boredomsketch

This is a personal work.

It started as a small sketch, and over two months, not on a daily basis i've working on this pic.
I have never spent so much time on a digital painting and now i feel it really worth the effort.
My idea regarding this work was to try to visualize somehow how a person's "heart" can be unlocked and the wounds that other relationships created are healed.
The tatoos on her are to remind her of something that she might have learned with other relations.
The rockabilly style on the tatoos are just because i really like the kind of tatoos and i guess they suit the purpose.
Watching Shawn Barber's work regarding tatoos are also the reason behind this work.
It was done using Corel Painter IX initially and then i switched to the X version wich helped me a lot blending the colors because of the real bristle feature.
The arm and the hand holding the key were really hard to got it righ (i still not happy with it).

I loved the time i spent doing it and had a lot a lot of fun.
And i hope you enjoy it too!

Illustration Friday - Red

Originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

I did this after watching a video about Carson Ellis on youtube.
I adore her drawings for The Decemberists. with the portraits of the band with cool frames around them.
So the face of this drawing is based on her face and her work.
I could said it was a portrait of her but some things are not exactly like her.

Well hope you enjoy my lttle red girl, which was done with a 2b pencil, plus a red and ocre color pencil's on my moleskine sketchbook. I was looking for a sort of old, yellowish paper, and that kind of paper works, i guess.

Illustration Friday - Phobia

Illustration Friday
Originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

This week topic is phobia.
So my take was not to show a phobia but try to interpret what it is and what it does to a people with a phobia.
It's a fear that is extreme and let's the person helpless.
I edited the drawing so it's more clear that the person on the drawing is naked so it seems more fragile.
Phoibia it's also a fear that borns and grows in our head, in our mind. And it does not gives us good thing so it's a dead tree growing in his head, with no fruits or leafs to give.
Enjoy it! :)

Originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

This week topic is farm.

The plant gives illustrations, because that is what i give to IF. An illustration participation :)
Hope you enjoy it! i had loads of fun doing it, so here it is. Done using corel painter, photoshop and wacom. But first of all, i drew it using a ballpoint pen on paper.

Illustration Friday - Match

Match
Originally uploaded by boredomsketch.

My take on Illustration Friday topic, Match.
It was done long time ago, using freehand mx. So it's a re-use of an illustration i've done just for fun.
The idea behind is in fact to illustrate a match, the spider is the judge, an the little dragons are batling each other.
You can make many interpretation of it, although the story i though that could be the base for this is to think that the judge can be an old teacher from a univ, or an old judge on a contest who has in his webs a lot of knowledge, won in many battles, doing ilustration or design, battling tough clients .
And the little dragons are just little designers, just graduate and they are trying to match it up! :P
